Examination of theories of oral and written language learning with a focus on models of literacy instruction for children at risk of reading failure. Review and evaluation of formal and informal assessments and teaching strategies for children from diverse language and cultural backgrounds and methods for addressing specific reading problems within a balanced reading program. A fieldwork component of 20 hours is included to provide candidates the opportunity to perfect their craft and to connect theory to practice.
