Teaching and Learning Social Studies in Elementary Education

Description

This course is designed to prepare prospective teachers for social studies instruction at the childhood level. The course examines the structures and concepts of the social studies as well as appropriate connections to other disciplines within the curriculum. Relevant research on child development and learning is incorporated, as are strategies to provide for students' special needs. Issues addressed include curriculum mapping, lesson planning, resources and materials, management, standards, alignment, assessment, and the educational application of technology. A fieldwork component of 15 hours (5 observational and 10 intermediate) is included. Not open for students who have taken EDE 302 or its equivalent.
